Arithmetic Reasoning is one of the four AFQT subtests and counts once in the formula. It is word problems, not raw computation — ratios and proportions, percentages and percent change, rates (speed, work, unit price), unit conversion, simple interest, averages and multi-step problems where you must decide which operation the story is asking for. On paper it is 30 questions in 36 minutes.

Mathematics Knowledge is an AFQT subtest counted once in the formula. It tests high-school algebra and geometry directly — solving linear equations and inequalities, exponents and roots, factoring and expanding, order of operations, number properties (primes, factors, LCM/GCF), angles, triangles, circles, area, perimeter and volume. On paper it is 25 questions in 24 minutes, under a minute each.

Word Knowledge is an AFQT subtest that, combined with Paragraph Comprehension, forms Verbal Expression (VE), which is counted twice in the AFQT formula. Questions ask for the word closest in meaning to a given word, alone or in a short sentence. On paper it is 35 questions in 11 minutes — under 20 seconds each — so the skill is recognition, built from roots, prefixes, suffixes and reading.

Paragraph Comprehension is an AFQT subtest that pairs with Word Knowledge to form Verbal Expression, counted twice in the AFQT. You read short passages and answer questions about the main idea, a specific detail, an inference the author implies but does not state, the author's purpose, or the meaning of a word in context. On paper it is 15 questions in 13 minutes, so read the question first and hunt for the answer.
